MAUI, HI – Two people were taken to the hospital after their vehicle was involved in an accident in Upcountry Maui on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
Hawaii News Now reports the driver was on Makawao Avenue heading towards Makawao Town when the incident took place at about 4 p.m.
The Maui Police Department said a tree fell onto the vehicle and power lines, with the live wires sparking a small fire that was extinguished a short time later.
The driver and a passenger in the vehicle were taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Emergency Center where they were listed in stable condition.
Hawaiian Electric reported that the accident left about 6,000 customers without power. Crews worked overnight to restore the power to the area.
