HONOLULU, HI – Honolulu police and paramedics were dispatched to a pedestrian collision that left an elderly man critically injured, reports the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
The 81-year-old was hit by a vehicle Tuesday afternoon in an accident that occurred in the vicinity of Ward Avenue and South Beretania Street shortly after 4 p.m. The pedestrian was trying to walk across Ward Avenue in a marked crosswalk when he fell in the roadway, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
A driver who had stopped at a red light at the intersection began to proceed north when the light turned green but did not see the pedestrian in the road and struck him. The man was transported by Emergency Medical Services to an area hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle, a 32-year-old man, was not injured and stayed at the scene. Police are continuing to investigate the incident, and said it does not appear that speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
