HONOLULU, HI – An accident in Honolulu Monday afternoon claimed the life of a moped rider, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.

It happened in the McCully area, in the vicinity of South King Street and Elsie Lane.  An initial investigation by the Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division determined that the victim, a 73-year-old man, was riding a moped east in the protected bike lane on South King Street when the crash happened at about 1:44 p.m.

The rider, who was not wearing a helmet at the time, lost control of the moped and slid out on the street.  He was rushed to an area hospital by Emergency Medical Services and was initially listed in serious condition.

The man was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning.  Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
