SPRECKELSVILLE, HI – Maui police are investigating a head-on collision Friday afternoon that left four people injured, reports Maui Now.
The crash, involving a 2007 GMC Sierra truck and a 2023 Nissan Altima sedan, took place on Hana Highway in Spreckelsville.
Accident investigators determined that the driver of the GMC was heading east in the opposite lane of travel while overtaking other vehicles. The driver of the Nissan was heading west in its proper lane of travel, and the vehicles collided near Nonohe Place at about 3:43 p.m.
The GMC driver, a 52-year-old Pā’ia man, the Nissan driver, a 68-year-old Idaho man, and the Nissan front seat passenger, a 73-year-old Idaho man, were taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center with what were described as major injuries. The back seat passenger of the Nissan, a 63-year-old Idaho woman, was transported to the same hospital with life-threatening injuries.
All occupants of both vehicles were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Investigators believe speed was a contributing factor in the incident but have yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
