WAIKOLOA, HI – The Hawai‘i Police Department is investigating a collision in Waikoloa that claimed the life of a toddler on Friday night, Big Island Now reported.
The incident took place in the parking lot of a residential complex off Waikoloa Road at about 7:15 p.m.
An initial investiigation determined that the driver of a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder SUV, a 26-year-old Waikoloa woman, had put the vehicle into reverse. It was at that time that a 3-year-old girl reportedly ran behind the Nissan and was struck.
The girl was pronounced dead later in the evening after being taken to Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital.
Police do not believe that speed, drugs, or alcohol were contributing factors in the collision.
