HILO, HI – A traffic collision on Kanoelehua Avenue in Hilo over the weekend left two women dead, reports KITV.

Police said the driver of a 2007 Honda Accord was headed south at 5:44 p.m. Saturday and lost control of the car near Piilani Street.  The Accord veered across the center median into oncoming northbound traffic and crashed into the back of a 2016 Acura sedan.  The Accord was then struck by a 2019 Subaru Forester.

The driver of the Honda, 42-year-old Aja-Ly Iopa of Hilo, and her front seat passenger, 43-year-old Sencirea Cabral of Kurtistown, died after being taken to Hilo Medical Center.  Neither woman was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, police said.  The drivers of the Acura and the Subaru were not injured.

Investigators believe that speed was one of the main contributing factors in the wreck.
