WAIKOLOA, HI – Hawai‘i Island police said two women in their 70s were killed in a collision in Waikoloa on Saturday morning.
According to a news release, police responded to Waikoloa Road after being notified of the incident at 11:39 a.m. Officers learned that the driver of a 2020 Kia Soul SUV was heading west when the vehicle crossed over the center line near the 3-mile marker and collided head-on with a westbound 2024 Chevrolet Blazer.
The driver of the Kia was pronounced dead after being taken to the North Hawaii Community Hospital. She was identified as 72-year-old Lynn Capell of Waimea. A back seat passenger in the Chevrolet, 79-year-old Eugenia Taylor of Alabama, died at the Kona Community Hospital.
The driver of the Chevrolet, a 75-year-old man from Washington, and the front seat passenger, a 77-year-old man from Alabama, were transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital.
A third vehicle veered off the road to avoid the collision but none of the four occupants were injured. Police investigating the crash believe that speed and inattention were contributing factors.
