AIEA, HI – Two people were hospitalized last week after a collision between a large box truck and a passenger van in the Aiea area, the Honolulu Police Department said.
The vehicles collided on the H-1 Freeway westbound near the Aiea off-ramp on Tuesday at about 2:40 p.m.
Police learned that a 33-year-old man was driving a box truck containing multiple propane tanks when the truck’s rollup door became ajar, When he stopped to try to secure the door, the vehicle was struck from behind by a westbound vehicle driven by a 73-year-old woman.
The woman was extricated from her car by the Honolulu Fire Department, and was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition. The driver of the box truck was hospitalized in serious condition but later was upgraded to good condition. Two men who were passengers in the truck, ages 33 and 24, complained of pain but refused treatment at the scene.
Police are investigating the crash, and so far they do not believe that speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
