HONOLULU, HI – The Honolulu Police Department said two people were killed and another injured in a multi-vehicle wreck on Thursday afternoon, KHON reports.
Four vehicles were involved in the collision that occurred on the H-1 Freeway near the Kaonohi Street overpass at 3:18 p.m.
According to police, a 34-year-old man was driving east on the freeway when he rear-ended another vehicle driven by an 81-year-old woman with an 85-year-old male passenger.
The investigation found that the woman’s vehicle spun out and traveled across multiple lanes of traffic, where it was broadsided by a 22-year-old man also driving eastbound.
The 22-year-old’s vehicle then collided with a fourth vehicle driven by a 57-year-old woman.
The 85-year-old man and 81-year-old woman, who were both wearing seat belts at the time, were transported to an area hospital in critical condition and were pronounced dead. The 22-year-old man was hospitalized in serious condition.
All eastbound lanes of the freeway were shut down in the area of the crash, causing traffic to be snarled for hours. Drivers were diverted onto the Waimalu off-ramp.
