Collision at Ewa Beach intersection kills man and woman riding bicycles

EWA BEACH, HI – Two bicycle riders died following a collision with a vehicle in Ewa Beach on Sunday morning, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports.

Honolulu police were called to the scene at the intersection of Iroquois Road and Fort Weaver after the incident took place at about 9:30 a.m.

An investigation indicated that a 20-year-old man lost control of his vehicle while driving west on Iroquois Road.  The vehicle veered into the eastbound lane and struck a utility pole on a pedestrian island, then struck the two bicyclists, who were crossing Fort Weaver Road in a marked crosswalk toward the pedestrian island.

One of the riders, a 62-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.  The other, a 75-year-old man, died after being taken to an area hospital.

The driver was not injured and stayed at the scene.  Police said the accident was a case involving two counts of negligent homicide, but that the driver had not yet been arrested.  Speed was being considered as a possible contributing factor.

The two victims, whose names were not immediately released, were not wearing helmets at the time they were struck.
