13-year-old boy dies following RTV accident in North Kona

NORTH KONA, HI – A 13-year-old boy died in an accident involving a Rugged Terrain Vehicle in  North Kona on Tuesday, Hawai‘i Island police said.

An investigation found that an 8-year-old boy was driving a Kubota RTV X900 on the 72-1000 block of Puukala Road at about 5:45 p.m. when it veered off the roadway.  The vehicle, which is designed for navigating rough landscapes, struck a rock embankment and overturned.

The 13-year-old boy, a Kailua-Kona resident, was ejected from the vehicle.  He was pronounced dead after being taken to Kona Community Hospital.  The 8-year-old was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

The police department’s Area II Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the crash.
