NANAKULI, HI – Police in Honolulu are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred in the Nanakuli area last week.

According to a news release from the Honolulu Police Department, the collision occurred Oct. 28 on Farrington Highway near the intersection with Pua Avenue.

Investigators determined that a 22-year-old woman was driving east on Farrington Highway in lane #1 at about 4:50 a.m. when she attempted to merge into lane #2, and collided with a 37-year-old male motorist whose vehicle merged into lane #2 from lane #3.

The impact caused the second driver to lose control of his vehicle, which then struck two female pedestrians, ages 19 and 42, who were walking in a marked crosswalk.

The pedestrians and the 37-year-old driver were transported to an area hospital.  The 19-year-old woman was pronounced dead, while the 42-year-old was in serious condition, as was the driver.

The 22-year-old driver was not injured and stayed at the scene.

Police said speed appeared to be a contributing factor in the crash, but have yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
