HONOLULU, HI – The Honolulu Police Department is investigating a collision that injured a passenger on a moped in the Nuuanu area.
A police news release states that the May 2 incident took place on North School Street near Likelike Highway shortly after 2 a.m. Preliminary information indicated that a 19-year-old male moped operator and his unidentified male passenger were traveling east on North School Street prior to Likelike Highway when he attempted to flee officers initiating a traffic stop.
The moped operator, traveling at a high rate of speed, veered to the right of the roadway and struck the curb, ejecting both occupants of the moped. The passenger was taken to an area hospital in serious condition and was later listed in critical condition. The driver and passenger were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
Police believe speed was a contributing factor in the crash.
