HONOLULU, HI – An accident at a Honolulu cruise ship terminal on Friday morning left one pedestrian dead and multiple others injured, according to KITV.

Authorities said the driver of a Hilo Hattie shuttle bus struck a group of pedestrians at Pier 2 in the 500 block of Ala Moana Boulevard in the Kakaako area at about 10:30 a.m.

Honolulu police said the driver, a 57-year-old man, was dropping off customers at the pier when a bystander told him that his vehicle was moving forward. The man then jumped back into the driver’s seat, trying to stop the vehicle, but he accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the brakes.  The bus collided with two concrete barriers and at least eleven pedestrians.

Nine of those who were struck were passengers for a cruise ship, Carnival Miracle, which was on a 15-day journey that departed Long Beach, California, on April 6.

Six people were transported by EMS to an area hospital.  One of the victims, a 68-year-old woman, was pronounced dead.  Four others were in serious condition – a 67-year-old man, a 67-year-old woman, a 58-year-old man, and a 55-year-old woman.  A man in his 70s was listed in stable condition.  Six other people were treated at the scene but declined transport to the hospital.

The Honolulu Police Department is continuing to investigate the accident.

A spokesperson with Carnival Cruise Line released a statement that read in part, “Sadly, one guest has died from her injuries. She was traveling with her husband, who was also injured and is expected to recover. Members of the Carnival Care Team are assisting the guests. Our thoughts are with the guests affected and their loved ones.”
