HILO, HI – Hawai‘i Island police were at the scene of a fatal collision on Daniel K. Inouye Highway on Saturday afaternoon, Big Island Now reports.

An investigation determined that the driver of a 2023 BMW sedan was heading east toward Hilo shortly after 2 p.m. and was overtaking other vehicles when the sedan collided head-on with an eastbound 2013 Ford SUV.  The Ford then hit a 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck going east.

A front seat passenger in the Ford was pronounced dead after being taken to an area hospital.  She was identified as 80-year-old Diane Pittman of Keauhou.  The driver of the Ford, an 85-year-old Keauhou man, was injured and taken to Hilo Medical Center.

The BMW driver a 69-year-old Pāhoa man, and the driver of the Chevy, a 65-year-old man from Pāhoa, were transported to the same hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The East Hawaii Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the wreck, which shut down the highway for several hours.
