HILO, HI – One person was killed and three others injured in a wreck near an intersection in Hilo on Friday morning, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.
The two-vehicle crash took place on the Panaewa stretch of Highway 11 near Mamaki Street at about 7:08 a.m. According to Hawaii Island police, the driver of a 2017 Honda Accord heading east on Mamaki Street tried to cross Highway 11 but failed to yield to a southbound 2012 Toyota Tacoma, and the vehicles collided.
The Honda driver died after being transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center. She was identified as 32-year-old Michaelah Turner of Kurtistown. A passenger in the Honda, a 13-year-old Kurtistown boy, sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.
The Toyota driver, a 17-year-old girl, and her passenger, a 15-year-old girl, sustained minor injuries. The two, residents of Hilo, were taken to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center.
Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the accident.
