1 dead, 1 injured after vehicles collide on Maluhia Road in Koloa

KAUAI, HI – One person was killed and another injured in a two-vehicle collision in Koloa early Friday morning.

According to the Kaua’i Police Department, the driver of a 2008 Honda sedan traveling northbound on Maluhia Road at about 4:10 a.m. crossed the center line while navigating a curve and collided with a southbound 2022 Toyota sport utility vehicle.

The driver of the Honda was killed and was identified as 35-year-old Brandon Nakaahiki of Kaua‘i. The front-seat passenger of the Honda, a 33-year-old woman from Kōloa, suffered serious injuries and was transported to Wilcox Medical Center before being transferred to The Queen’s Medical Center on O‘ahu.

The Toyota driver, a a 70-year-old woman from Kapa‘a, did not report any injuries.

A preliminary investigation indicated that speed and weather conditions may have been contributing factors in the fatal wreck. Toxicology results are pending to determine whether impairment was also a factor.

Maluhia Road was closed in both directions for about 2 hours and 45 minutes while the Kaua‘i Police Department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted its investigation.
