Distracted driving is one of the main causes of crashes in Hawaii and across the United States. Drivers these days face an abundance of distractions like cellphones and other gadgets that can take focus off of the road. According to statistics, about 25 percent of all fatal car accidents are the result of distracted driving. Alarming statistics such as this explain why police forces around the country are cracking down on distracted drivers.
A fatal crash in Kauai that killed one man and injured another may have been caused by distracted driving. The accident happened during the morning hours on Kaumauli Highway. According to reports, a pickup truck was traveling west on the highway and crossed the centerline. Reportedly, the pickup truck collided head-on with an oncoming flatbed truck.
The driver of the flatbed truck was injured and transported to a hospital for treatment. The driver of the pickup truck was severely injured and, tragically, later died at the hospital, authorities said. Reports said the highway remained closed for six hours following the crash as police conducted an investigation.
Operating a motor vehicle requires focus and constant attention at all times. Texting or using cellphones and other electronic devices while behind the wheel can take a driver’s focus off of the road and cause an accident. Hawaii residents who have suffered injuries or the loss of loved ones in car accidents could benefit by seeking the services of an experienced attorney. If negligence is documented, a lawsuit could result in much-needed compensation to help recover any monetary losses.
