Tractor-trailers, although not as prevalent in Hawaii as in the continental United States, are an economical and convenient way to transport goods and services. However, these huge commercial vehicles present a unique danger to those in smaller passenger vehicles. Due to their massive size, car accidents involving tractor-trailers often end in serious injury or death. A crash on the Big Island involved a tractor-trailer and ended with four people suffering injuries.
The crash happened in Kailua-Kona on Queen Kaahumanu Highway during the morning commute. Three vehicles were involved in the accident. According to reports, a Jeep pulled out from Kaupulehu Drive and into the path of a southbound tractor-trailer.
Reportedly, the driver of the tractor-trailer swerved in an attempt to miss the Jeep. This caused the truck to fishtail and land on its side, colliding with an SUV in the process. Authorities said the driver of the tractor-trailer, the driver of the SUV and a passenger in the Jeep were injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Another person was airlifted to the hospital in serious condition, reports said.
Commercial vehicles such as tractor-trailers are vital to the economy in Hawaii. With roadways becoming more and more crowded every day, the potential for a tragic accident always exists. Those in Hawaii who have suffered injuries or loss due to negligence in car accidents can pursue legal action. Damages from a successfully litigated claim could be used to cover medical expenses and other financial losses that may have occurred due to this tragedy.
