PAHOA, HI – A motorcyclist died following a collision with a car Wednesday evening at an intersection in Pahoa, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported.

Hawaii Island police were called to the area of Kahakai Boulevard and Niuhi Street after the crash was reported at about 5:30 p.m.

An initial investigation indicated that the operator of a Honda CBR600F motorcycle was heading westbound on Kahakai Boulevard and crashed into a 2006 Toyota Camry whose driver was turning left onto Niuhi Street.

The motorcyclist, identified as 36-year-old Korey Palmerton of Paho, was pronounced dead after being transported to the Hilo Benioff Medical Center.  He was not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred, police said.

The driver of the Toyota, 36-year-old Kade Smith of Pahoa, was arrested on multiple charges, including allegedly driving under the influence of an intoxicant, first-degree negligent homicide, and driving after a license had been suspended or revoked for a previous DUI.

Smith, who was not injured in the crash, was being held at the Hilo Police Station pending further investigation.

Police believe speed, alcohol and/or drugs and inattention were contributing factors in the fatal wreck.
