MAKIKI, HI – Police are investigating a collision that critically injured a moped rider in the Makiki area early Saturday morning.
According to a release from the Honolulu Police Department, the accident occurred in the vicinity of Wilder Avenue and Makiki Street at about 12:20 a.m.
It was reported to the department’s Traffic Division that a driver was heading eastbound on Wilder Avenue when she attempted to make a left turn onto Makiki Street and struck a moped rider going west on Wilder Avenue.
The rider, a 23-year-old man, was rushed to an area hospital where he was listed in critical condition. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
The driver of the vehicle, a 17-year-old female, along with her two passengers, a 19-year-old female and 18-year-old man, were not injured and stayed at the scene.
It was not immediately clear whether speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.
