HONOLULU, HI – A woman was critically injured in a single-vehicle crash in the Kunia area early Tuesday morning, according to the Honolulu Police Department.
The accident happened on Kunia Road south of Kunia Drive at about 1:25 a.m. It was reported to the police department’s Traffic Division that a 24-year-old woman was driving southbound on Kunia Road when she traveled into the northbound lane and drove off the roadway into the brush.
The vehicle struck multiple rock boulders and a cattle gate, before it continued traveling forward into an open field where it overturned multiple times and went up in flames. The driver was extricated by officers before the car caught fire.
The woman, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision, was transported to an area hospital in serious condition and was later listed in critical condition.
Investigators believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the wreck.
