KAPOLEI, HI – One man was killed and another injured in a collision involving multiple vehicles in the Kapolei area on Sunday night.

According to the Honolulu Police Department, the crash occurred on the H-1 Freeway prior to the Makakilo off-ramp at about 8 p.m.  The police department’s Traffic Division determined that a 32-year-old man was driving west on the H1 Freeway when he tried to avoid a collision with another vehicle.

The man lost control of his vehicle as he traveled into the right shoulder lane, up the dirt embankment, and back into the shoulder lane where he sideswiped two unoccupied vehicles parked in the shoulder lane.

The driver kept going west in the shoulder lane and rear-ended another parked and unoccupied vehicle.  That vehicle then struck two male pedestrians, ages 24 and 26, who were changing their vehicle’s tire.   The vehicle that had been rear-ended was propelled forward, causing it to roll over multiple times, before it struck another parked and unoccupied vehicle in the shoulder lane.

The 26-year-old pedestrian died at the scene, while the 24-year-old was hospitalized in critical condition.

The 32-year-old driver involved in the initial collision was not hurt and stayed at the scene.
