WAIPAHU, HI – A motorcyclist has died as the result of injuries suffered in a crash with a vehicle in Waipahu last month, the Honolulu Police Department said.
The incident occurred Nov. 29 at about 7:15 p.m. on Malakeke Street. Investigators learned that a motorist was driving westbound on Malakeke Street and traveled into the eastbound lane to try and overtake another vehicle. The motorist collided with an electric motorcycle being driven by a 19-year-old man.
The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected onto the roadway and was transported by EMS to an area hospital in critical condition. On December 11, Honolulu police were notified by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office that the motorcyclist had been pronounced dead.
The driver of the vehicle, a 44-year-old man, and his juvenile passenger were not injured in the crash and stayed at the scene.
Police believe speed was a contributing factor in the incident but have yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved. The investigation is ongoing.
