MAUI, HI – A bicycle rider was struck and killed by an SUV in Lahaina on Thursday morning, according to a release from the Maui Police Department.
The fatal crash took place on Honoapiilani Highway near Fleming Road at about 5:46 a.m. Police said the driver of a Honda CR-V was headed north on the highway in the left inner lane when she struck the bicyclist as he was turning left in front of her.
The bicyclist, a 48-year-old man from Lahaina, was ejected onto the road and was pronounced dead after being taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was identified as 48-year-old Michael Bautista of Lahaina. Bautista was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, police said.
The driver, a 52-year-old woman from Napili, was not injured and remained at the scene.
Investigators said speed does not appear to have been a contributing factor in the collision, but it was not yet known whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
