PAHALA, HI – Hawai‘i Island police said a car wreck in Pahala last week killed the driver, a 13-year-old boy.

The accident, reported by KITV, took place Thursday evening, Sept. 4, along Cone Haul Road.   An investigation found that the boy was driving a 2006 Honda Civic eastbound sometime before 5:55 p.m. and veered off the roadway.  The Civic traveled down an embankment and then crashed into a large tree.

The driver, a Pahala resident, was pronounced dead after being transported to Ka‘ū Community Hospital.   His passenger, a 15-year-old boy, was not injured.  Neither teen was wearing a seat belt when the fatal collision occurred, police said.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
