HONOLULU, HI – A driver is facing charges following a collision in Waiamanalo late Friday night that left a moped rider dead, according to KITV.
An investigation by the Honolulu Police Department determined that the driver of a vehicle was going north on Kalanianaole Highway at about 11:15 P.M. and crossed into the southbound lane, where he struck a woman driving a moped.
The moped rider, age 41, was ejected onto the roadway and died at the scene. She was not wearing a helmet at the time, police said.
The driver of the vehicle, a 44-year-old man, sustained minor injuries. He was subsequently arrested on charges of first-degree negligent homicide and operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
Investigators said alcohol appears to have been a contributing factor in the crash, the 42nd traffic fatality in Oahu in 2025 compared to 19 at this time last year.
