NANAKULI, HI – A suspected drunk driver was arrested following a collision with a motorcyclist in the Nanakuli area on Saturday evening.
According to a news release from the Honolulu Police Department, an 18-year-old motorist was heading west on Farrington Highway at about 7:51 p.m. and made an illegal left turn onto Pohakunui Avenue. The vehicle collided with a 31-year-old motorcyclist who was traveling eastbound on Farrington Highway. The motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was ejected from the bike onto the roadway.
The rider was taken to Queen’s Medical Center and was initially listed in critical condition but was later upgraded to serious condition.
The motorist was not injured and stayed at the scene. Police said the motorist showed signs of impairment and was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant.
Investigators said alcohol appears to have been a contributing factor in the crash, but that speed and drugs were not involved.
