HONOLULU, HI – The Honolulu Police Department released details of a fatal collision that occurred on Friday morning in the Aiea area.
The two-vehicle wreck took place at the intersection of Kahuapaani Street and Mananai Place shortly before 11 a.m. It was reported to police that a 40-year-old man was driving north on Kahuapaani Street when he disregarded a red traffic signal and tried to turn left onto Mananai Place. During the turn, his vehicle was broadsided by a vehicle heading south on Kahuapaani Street.
A passenger in the second vehicle, a 25-year-old woman, was pronounced dead after being taken to an area hospital. The driver of the second vehicle, a 22-year-old woman, and the driver of the first vehicle were taken to the hospital in good condition. A passenger in the first vehicle, a 34-year-old man, refused medical treatment at the scene.
Investigators do not believe speed was a contributing factor in the crash, but have yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
