HONOLULU, HI – The two victims of a fatal head-on collision in Punaluu last week have now been identified, reports Hawaii News Now.
According to the Honolulu Medical Examiner, the women who died in the wreck were 28-year-old Katrell Plunkett and 18-year-old Miyanna Haiola, who were cousins.
The incident occurred June 17 on Kamehameha Highway near Puhuli Street shortly before 9 p.m. Investigators determined that Plunkett was driving southbound when the vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and crashed into another vehicle. The first vehicle overturned, and rescue crews used hydraulic tools to remove the four occupants.
Plunkett and Haiola, one of her passengers, died at the scene. Two other passengers, women 28 and 19, were hospitalized in critical condition. The other driver, a 17-year-old female, was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.
Police said no one in the first vehicle was wearing a seat belt. The Honolulu Police Department believes speed was a contributing factor in the fatal crash but had yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol were factors.
