PUNALUU, HI – A two-car wreck in Punaluu Tuesday night claimed the lives of two women in one of the vehicles, reports the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
Emergency crews were called to the area of Kamehameha Highway near Puhuli Street shortly before 9 p.m. Investigators determined that a driver was heading south on Kamehameha Highway when the vehicle crossed into the northbound lane and crashed into another vehicle head-on. The first vehicle overturned, and rescue crews used hydraulic tools to remove the four occupants.
The driver of the first vehicle, a 28-year-old woman, and one passenger, a 19-year-old woman, died at the scene. Two other passengers, women 28 and 19, were transported to an area hospital in critical condition. The other driver, a 17-year-old female, was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.
Police said no one in the first vehicle was wearing a seat belt. The Honolulu Police Department believes speed was a contributing factor in the fatal crash but had yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol were factors.
