HONOLULU, HI – Two people were taken to the hospital after a moped accident in Honolulu Saturday afternoon, the Honolulu Police Department said.
The crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m. near the intersection of Keeaumoku Street and Kanunu Street in the Ala Moana area.
It was reported to investigators that a 20-year-old female moped rider and an 18-year-old female passenger were traveling southbound on Keeaumoku Street when she attempted to stop at the intersection.
Before coming to a complete stop, the 20-year-old lost her balance causing her and the moped, as well as the 18-year-old passenger to fall over onto the roadway. While they were on the ground, both were struck by a vehicle going south on Keeaumoku Street in the adjacent lane.
The moped rider and her passenger were taken to an area hospital in serious condition. The passenger’s condition was later downgraded to critical. Police said the 20-year-old was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but the 18-year-old was not.
The driver of the vehicle, a 21-year-old woman, remained at the scene. She and her four passengers were not injured.
Police are continuing to investigate the collision, and said that speed, drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been contributing factors.
