PEARL CITY, HI – The Honolulu Police Department released information about a fatal collision in the Pearl City area late Monday night.
The two-vehicle wreck occurred on Waihona Street at about 11:30 p.m. Investigators in the Traffic Division learned that a 65-year-old man was driving northbound when he crossed over the double solid yellow centerline and crashed into a southbound vehicle. The first car was redirected into the northbound lane, where it went off the roadway, onto a sidewalk, and struck a tree.
The 65-year-old driver was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, police said. The other driver, age 33, was transported to a hospital and was listed in good condition.
Police do not believe speed was a contributing factor in the collision, the 27th traffic fatality on Oahu this year compared to 11 at this time last year.
