HONOLULU, HI – A motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a vehicle in the Waimanalo area last week, the Honolulu Police Department said.
The crash happened April 8 near the intersection of Waikupanaha Street and Mahailua Street at about 3:46 p.m. An investigation determined that a 59-year-old man was driving a vehicle with a trailer in tow while heading south on Mahailua Street.
As he tried to make a left turn onto Waikupanaha Street, the vehicle was broadsided a motorcycle heading west on Waikupanaha Street at a high rate of speed.
The motorcycle rider, a 22-year-old man, was ejected onto the roadway and was then struck by the trailer of the vehicle. The motorcyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle was not injured and stayed at the scene.
Police believe speed was a contributing factor in the accident, but that drugs and alcohol were not involved.
