HONOLULU, HI – A man has died of injuries suffered in a scooter accident last month, according to the Hawaii Police Department.
The incident occurred March 11 in the vicinity of Palama Street and Lakimela Lane at about 7:15 p.m. Investigators determined that a motorist was trying to reverse into a private driveway on Palama Street when the scooter operator attempted to go around the rear of the vehicle. The scooter collided with the passenger side taillight.
The scooter operator, age 54, lost control and was ejected onto the roadway. He was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. The motorist, a 30-year-old man, was not injured and stayed at the scene.
On April 8, Honolulu police were notified by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office that the scooter rider had been pronounced dead, making this the 20th traffic fatality of 2025 compared to 9 at this time last year.
Investigators do not believe speed, drugs, or alcohol contributed to the crash. They added that the scooter operator was not wearing a helmet at the time it happened.
The investigation remains ongoing.
