KIHEI, HI – A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Kihei on Tuesday night, according to the Maui Police Department.
The collision occurred at 8:36 p.m. on South Kihei Road, 100 feet north of Kauhaa Street. A preliminary investigation indicated that the pedestrian was walking north within the northbound lane on South Kihei Road when he was struck by a vehicle going in the same direction.
The driver of the vehicle, possibly a silver or grey Toyota pick-up truck, fled the scene northbound on South Kihei Road to an unknown location without stopping to help.
The pedestrian, a 48-year-old man from Kihei, died at the scene. Investigators have yet to determine whether speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the collision.
Maui police are working to identify the driver and vehicle involved in the crash.
