PAHOA, HI – A motorcyclist died after a collision with a dump truck in Pahoa on Monday afternoon, reports KITV.
An investigation by Hawaii Island police found that the motorcyclist was riding south on Keaau-Pahoa Road after 3 p.m. and began passing multiple vehicles on the mauka shoulder. The motorcycle collided with a 2020 Peterbilt dump truck whose driver was turning right into a driveway.
The motorcycle rider, a man in his 30s or 40s, was pronounced dead at Hilo Benioff Medical Center. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The dump truck driver, a 67-year-old man from Hilo, was not injured.
Investigators believe speed and alcohol and/or drugs were possible contributing factors in the incident.
