KAANAPALI, HI – A driver is under arrest in connection with a crash that critically injured a motorcyclist in Kaanapali on Friday evening, KITV reports.
According to police, the driver of a 2024 Chevrolet Suburban was making an illegal left turn onto Honoapiilani Highway from a parking area at about 7:30 p.m. The operator of a southbound 2017 KTM motorcycle was traveling in the inner lane of the highway and struck the Suburban as it turned near Kekaa Drive.
The motorcyclist was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room and was listed in critical condition. The rider was a 35-year-old man from Lahaina. Police said he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The Suburban driver, a 37-year-old woman and her 41-year-old passenger, both from Washington State, were not injured.
The driver of the Suburban was subsequently arrested on a charge of first-degree negligent injury, and was released pending further investigation.
Investigators are trying to determine whether speed, drugs or alcohol contributed to the accident.
