OAHU, HI – A man will be heading to prison for causing an accident that killed two people on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii News Now reports.
29-year-old Brennen Canumay was sentenced last week for the wreck that occurred in August 2022. He will serve concurrent sentences of two 20-year-terms each for manslaughter and five years for second-degree assault.
Authorities said Canumay was driving a Ford Ranger recklessly when he made an illegal U-turn on Kamehameha Highway, weaved back and forth at high speeds, and crashed into another vehicle occupied by a family visiting from Virginia. Two people in the other vehicle, Ronald Hartman and Michelle Hartman, were killed while their daughter Holly, a front seat passenger, was injured.
Canumay consumed over half a bottle of liquor prior to the collision, prosecutors said. He pleaded no contest to the manslaughter and assault charges.
“This was a horrific and tragic collision that could have been prevented,” said Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm. “The Defendant’s unlawful, reckless, and aggressive driving, his admitted use of alcohol, and his anger on the day of the collision lead to his sentence of 20 years instead of probation.”
