PAHOA, HI – An elderly man was killed in an accident near a residence in Pāhoa on Sunday morning, the Hawaii Police Department said.
The victim was identified as 79-year-old George D. Coit of Kea‘au. The incident happened in the driveway to a residence in the 15-2700 block of Maiko Street.
Police responded to the scene following a call at 11:55 a.m. They learned that Coit had been struck in the driveway by a 2008 Ford Econoline van operated by a 50-year old man from Kea‘au.
Coit was pronounced dead several hours later at the Hilo Benioff Medical Center.
The driver of the van was not injured. The Area I Traffic Enforcement Unit is conducting a negligent homicide investigation.
Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the collision.
