WAIKOLOA, HI – Hawai‘i Island police have released details of a crash in Waikoloa Thursday morning that killed a 17-year-old girl.

Officers responded to the scene at the intersection of Māmalahoa Highway (Highway 190) and Waikoloa Road (Highway 191) at 7:59 a.m.

An investigation determined that the driver of a 2022 Chevrolet Spark sedan was making a left turn from Waikoloa Road onto Māmalahoa Highway when the car was broadsided by a southbound 2018 Peterbilt tractor trailer transporting 5,000 gallons of water.

The Chevrolet driver, a 17-year-old Waikoloa girl, was pronounced dead after being taken to Kona Community Hospital.  Three teenage girls who were passengers in the Chevrolet were hospitalized with serious injuries.

The truck driver, a 59-year-old man, was not injured.

The police department is conducting a major traffic collision investigation into the incident.

Police noted that this is the 24th traffic fatality this year compared to 15 at this time last year, a 60% increase, and reminded motorists to drive safely and soberly.
