MAILI, HI – Police in Honolulu said an accident on Friday morning claimed the life of an elderly pedestrian.

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the incident happened on Kaukama Road near Kulauku Street in Maili at about 8:45 a.m.

A police investigation determined that a driver who stopped her vehicle on Kaukama Road tried to re-enter the roadway’s westbound lanes and struck an 88-year-old man who was crossing Kaukama Road outside of a marked crosswalk.

The victim was pronounced dead after being rushed by Honolulu EMS to an area hospital.  His name was not released.  The driver involved, a 68-year-old woman, was not injured and stayed at the scene.

Investigators do not believe speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.
