KAHULUI, HI – An arrest has been made in a May hit-and-run crash in Kahului that left a man dead, Maui police announced.
According to a KITV report, the suspect was identified as 30-year-old Stacia Hoopii Sardella. Police said Sardella was behind the wheel May 27 on Lono Avenue when her vehicle ran over a man lying in the roadway at about 3:10 a.m. The victim, 57-year-old Jesus Mettao, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sardella allegedly kept going after the collision without stopping to help. She was arrested last week on a complaint of collision involving death or serious injury, and was released pending investigation.
Surveillance images had been released to the public of a red sedan that was reportedly the vehicle that struck Mettao.
