HONOLULU, HI – A man died after his motorcycle was involved in a collision in Honolulu early Saturday morning, police said.

According to Hawaii News Now, the incident happened along the westbound H-1 Freeway in the Waipahu area.  Investigators learned that a driver on the H-1 Freeway slowed down to avoid a previous accident shortly before 2 a.m.

At that point, the driver’s vehicle was struck from behind by a westbound motorcycle rider going at a high rate of speed.  The motorcyclist, a 44-year-old man, was thrown from his bike and killed.  He was wearing a helmet at the time.  The driver of the vehicle, a 50-year-old man, was taken to an area hospital and reported to be in good condition.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Honolulu Police Department, which said speed appears to have been a contributing factor.
