EWA BEACH, HI – Authorities said a collision in the Ewa Beach area Sunday morning left an elderly moped rider critically injured.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports the 77-year-old victim was riding north on the shoulder of Fort Weaver Road when the crash occurred at about 6:30 a.m.
Honolulu police said that as the rider crossed the intersection of Renton Road, he was hit by an eastbound pickup truck that was crossing Fort Weaver Road with the green light.
The moped rider was ejected onto the road and was taken to an area hospital in critical condition. He was not wearing a helmet when the crash happened, police said.
The pickup driver, a 29-year-old man, and his 23-year-old male passenger were not injured. They stayed at the scene.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident, and said that speed, alcohol or drugs do not appear to have been contributing factors.
