KA’U, HI – The Hawai‘i Police Department said a motorcyclist was killed in an accident in Ka’u on Thursday.

Police issued a news release on the incident that happened at the intersection of Mamalahoa Highway and Leilani Street.

Officers responding at 5:37 p.m. learned that the operator of a 2022 Kawasaki KLX300 motorcycle traveling south had overtaken several vehicles near the Manuka State Park entrance.

After passing the vehicles, the motorcycle was seen crossing over the double solid yellow lines and then hit a rock embankment on the mauka side of the highway.

The rider, a 59-year-old Ocean View man, was ejected from the bike.  He was pronounced dead after being taken to the Kona Community Hospital.
