KAILUA-KONA, HI – The Hawaii Police Department said a pickup truck driver died in a crash early Sunday morning.
The incident happened near the intersection of Hawai‘i Belt Road (Highway 190) and the Highway 180 junction, police said in a news release.
Responding police determined that the driver of a 2004 Nissan Frontier was traveling south of the intersection at about 4:35 a.m. when he crossed over the double solid lines and crashed into a rock embankment. The pickup overturned, hit a utility pole, and went down a 10-foot embankment.
The driver, a 31-year-old Maui man, was pronounced dead after being taken to the Kona Community Hospital. The victim was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident. No one else was in the vehicle at the time.
Police said they believe that speed and impairment may have been contributing factors in the wreck.
