HILO, HI – Hawai‘i Island police said they are trying to find the driver involved in a hit-and-run incident that injured a pedestrian in Hilo.
In a news release, police said the crash happened Dec. 28 on Kilauea Avenue near the intersection with Mohouli Street.
Police responding to the scene at about 6:42 p.m. learned that a 75-year-old pedestrian crossing the street had been struck by an unknown pickup truck or sport utility vehicle. The victim was seriously injured and was taken to the Queens Medical Center on Oahu for treatment.
It was determined that the driver involved fled the scene going north on Kilauea Avenue after the collision without stopping to help.
The South Hilo Patrol Division launched a Negligent Injury investigation and asked anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the Hawaii Police Department. The driver faces up to 10 years in prison if arrested and convicted.
