KONA, HI – A single-vehicle accident in South Kona early Sunday morning left a driver dead, according to a KITV report.

Hawaii County police responded to the scene on Mamalahoa Highway near Manuka State Park after being notified of the incident shortly after 2 a.m.  According to an initial investigation, a woman was driving a 2011 Mazda CX-9 SUV southbound when she veered off the right shoulder and the Mazda went down a 20-foot embankment.

The vehicle rolled over and went up in flames.  Firefighters extinguished the fire and found the driver, who was pronounced dead at an area hospital.  Authorities said she was a 33-year-old woman from Na’alehu.  She was not wearing a seat belt at the time, police said.  No one else was in the vehicle.

Investigators believe excessive speed and driver impairment were contributing factors in the wreck.
