WAIKIKI, HI – An accident in Waikiki on Monday afternoon left a bicycle rider critically injured, police said.
According to a KITV report, the incident occurred on Kapahulu Avenue near Jefferson Elementary School at about 3:45 p.m.
An investigation by Honolulu police found that a 59-year-old man was riding an e-bike east when he crossed over the double solid yellow line. The bicyclist was struck by a vehicle going west in the left lane of Kapahulu Avenue. The man was ejected from the bike, and ended up in the path of another westbound vehicle which also struck him.
The bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet at the time, was hospitalized in critical condition. The driver of the first vehicle, a 64-year-old man, and the other driver, a 67-year-old woman, were not injured and stayed at the crash scene.
Police are continuing to investigate the accident, and said it did not appear at this point that speed, drugs or alcohol were contributing factors.
